Things I Miss From The US
Here is a random list of things that I miss from the US. I will just add to the list as I find other things I miss:
- Large bags of uncooked shrimp/prawns – I am talking 20 count, shell on. Why does Britain ship away all their good shrimp?
- Large bags of potato chips – The bags of crisps they have here can pretty much be eaten in one sitting by two people, if not one. They are just small enough that once you have had your fill you notice that there are hardly any chips left so you plow through it to the end.
- Customer service – really! The awfulness of the customer service here is unbelievable and makes me long for American efficiency; we didn’t know how good we had it until we left
- Mt. Dew – There is no substitute
- Tortilla shells – I use tortilla shells as a surrogate for any Mexican fare. This also applies to the wide range of peppers that I was used to in California
- Power outlet(s) in the bathroom – Our house doesn’t have a power outlet in the bathroom. Furthermore, things like razors and electric toothbrushes all require an adapter to fit into the UK plug. This doesn’t make sense to me.
- College basketball on TV – Sure, I can be steeped in football and rugby all I want here, but as a Midwesterner, I am a devoted college basketball fan. Not only am I not going to get to see many games this year, but most of them will start around midnight here.
- Asian grocery – Cheap rice and vegetables and all the ramen you can eat. I miss you New May Wah.
- Pretzels – Why can’t I find decent pretzels here?
- Shops being open on Sundays and past 5 pm – It can be so frustrating to find time to get what you need.
- My old friends!
